On Oct. 12, Puna Hongwanji will present its annual bazaar from 7-11 a.m. on the church grounds on Old Volcano Road. Built in 1937, the Puna Hongwanji Mission is a landmark in Keaau town and serves as a gateway to the Puna district. Proceeds from the bazaar go to the ever-increasing cost of maintaining the facilities.
There will be a grand rummage sale featuring an assortment of items. Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing will be available, as well as toys and assorted household goods, including everything from kitchen utensils to bed linens to tools.
“A major attraction to the bazaar is the silent auction featuring many cool items,” said event Chairman James Potter. “This year one of our biggest items is a 10-panel solar photovoltaic system that includes free installation. This is a chance to get the whole system for way below cost. Also there will be mowers, artwork, fine jewelry, gift baskets, furniture and more.
“For those looking for ono kind grinds, the temple will be offering smoked pork, lau lau (three per bag) prepared in the church’s custom-made stainless steel steamers. In addition, the concessions will have chili and rice, hot dogs, and assorted drinks,” Potter said. “The church members will also be on hand to sell the various foods items that have become the highlights for many who attend.
“Some of these terrific, tasty treats include cone sushi, chichi mochi, nishime, spam musubi, andagi, sekihan, assorted pickles and baked goods. For those who work in the yard, the congregation’s outdoor volunteers will be selling bagged cinders for $3.50 a bag. There will also be a great assortment of handmade crafts, such as re-bags, jewelry, adult beanies, aprons, baby blankets, Christmas ornaments, all-occasion tags, drying hangers and assorted denim bags, just to name a few.”
There will be a variety of plants and flowers to choose from. As in the past, the bazaar will use a scrip-based purchase system. Scrip can be purchased beforehand by getting in touch with any temple member.
